Western Governors act to improve tourist experience on federal lands

Because of the tax revenue and maintenance costs, state and federal governments sometimes struggle to find a balance managing lands and maximizing their economic impacts.

The new memorandum outlines areas of specific improvement, recognizing the importance of tourism on federal lands and waters.

The cooperative efforts aim to enhance the visitor experience and accessibility to federal lands, waters and shores, while protecting natural, environmental, cultural and historical resources, as well as to advance marketing partnerships between public and private organizations while expanding small business opportunities in tourism.

NATIVE Act signed into law

The Native American Tourism and Improving Visitor Experience (NATIVE) Act, sponsored by Sen. Brian Schatz, D-HI, requires federal agencies with tourism assets and responsibilities to coordinate and collaborate with Native entities in their strategic planning.

It would also provide Native Alaska, Native Hawaiian and American Indian communities with access to resources and technical assistance needed to build sustainable recreational and cultural travel and tourism infrastructure capacity, promote economic development and create jobs.

The legislation also had support from the U.S. Travel Association, Southeast Tourism Society, National Congress of American Indians, Alaska Federation of Natives and the Native Enterprise Initiative of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.
